More info...
By Gerry Ronson

There are many varieties of dog breeds that you can find around the world. You will find that some breeds are more common to specific areas, but the lucky thing is if you like that breed you can usually find a breeder to purchase the dog from. With the Anatolian Shepherd dog you will find they are one of the more rare dogs in the Middle East. The temperament of this dog offers you one of the more intelligent and loyal of the species. Below you will learn not only about its physical characteristics, but also about its temperament and some training advice.

First of all you should realize that this dog is a working dog. This means that they need a lot of space to be happy and they dont necessarily live well in cooler climates. They are a hard breed to find, but are gaining in popularity around the world because of their characteristics. You will find they are loyal and devoted to one owner. This means that while they do well in families with children they tend to have a master. They are also very agile as hunters because they are used for hunting and guarding of families.

The Anatolian Shepherd dog is one very sleek and muscular animal. They have a short coat with fawn colouring and a black muzzle and eyes. Like most dogs the over coat is rather thick and coarse. They do have a softer under coat that will keep them warm during the nights. For these dogs you need to have a lot of space for them to run around in. You may find that they do well on farms as sheep guarders or other large animals.

Care and grooming are important for any dog that you own. In some cases you will find certain dog breeds are easier to take care of than others. In the case of the Anatolian Shepherd dog you will find they are rather easy to groom. Their short haired coat doesnt need grooming except for once a week or if you have been in a high insect area. You will also find that their toenails, eyes, and ears are easy to keep clean and that they are fairly healthy dogs. Training is important in this breed based on the dominant displays. They are masters in their race, which means it takes a specific master and some obedience training to get this dog to behave properly. When you use patience and a consistent hand you will find that training is rewarded with their high intelligence. They can be trained for other work besides guarding. All though they are not currently used for police work or rescue work they do make great show dogs when they have the proper care. These dogs also need to be socialized at an early age during training. This means that they are introduced not only to other pets and animals, but also children and other humans to make the transition a little easier.

Dogs that are great with guarding or watch dogs tend to need a little training in regards to socialization. The socialization helps them to interact with more people rather than going off to hide or worse guard the home from friends. The Anatolian Shepherd dog is still found in the Middle East primarily, but they can be found in the UK or US if you go to a breeder directly.

Tips on How to Select Your Dog
By Jimmy Cox

The right dog can be a source of fun and companionship for many years. But the wrong dog may well turn out to be a nuisance and cause of family dissension. So, give some serious thought to the matter of picking your dog.

Purebred, Crossbreed, or Mongrel

To paraphrase Gertrude Stein: "A dog is a dog is a dog." No one breed or mixture is better than another. It all depends on why you want a dog and what kind of a dog your particular situation will maintain. There's only one species of dog, Canis familiaris, with 116 breeds registered in the American Kennel Club. As to the crossbreeds and mongrels, their numbers and combinations are best left to the mathematicians. You may be sure, though, the crossbreeds and mongrels far outnumber the purebreds.

The purebreds, crossbreeds and mongrels are much alike in their general behavior and instincts. Any one of them will offer friendship, loyalty and companionship. And with reasonable care, a dog from any of these groups will turn into a fine pet.

Purebred dogs

A purebred dog is one whose parents and ancestors are of a single breed. It is a dog with a traceable pedigree. In America, purebred dogs are registered with the American Kennel Club. Foreign purebred dogs are registered in the official kennel club of the specific country. The American Kennel Club now registers 116 breeds, divided into six groups.

Crossbreeds and mongrels

You may have decided that you just want a dog, nothing fancy - animal or price. If so, you have a wide range of choice from among the many combinations of crossbreeds and mongrels. They have little monetary value, but they'll give every bit as much loyalty and companionship as the purebreds.

Don't think that because crossbreeds and mongrels are purchased cheaply or obtained gratis, they are not highly prized by their owners. Of the 26 million dogs in the United States, more than two-thirds are crossbreeds and mongrels. And, along with the purebreds, these "cheap" dogs are the best-fed and best-cared for dogs in the world.

There are some disadvantages in getting a crossbreed or mongrel dog. To be sure, the crossbreed will grow up to look somewhat like his sire or dam. But not the mongrel; what he will look like is anybody's guess. Neither the crossbreed nor the mongrel can be entered in dog shows or field trials. So take this fact into consideration if you want to take part in the competitive areas of the dog world.

You will not experience much difficulty in finding a crossbreed or mongrel. And often they are yours for the asking. Consult the classified ads in your newspaper, visit a humane society, or reputable pet shop, and check with any neighbors who have puppies they cannot keep.

Male Vs. Female

The choice between a male or female should be based on facts, not prejudice. There are pros and cons for both sexes. The usual objection to the female is her estrus cycle or heat periods. She has a discharge during her periods, wants to go out and roam, and attracts a horde of canine Romeos. Add to this the excellent chance of unwanted puppies and you have the case against the female.

It's really not a very strong case. Let's consider some of the pros for the female. You'll find she is cleaner around the house, with better control of her bladder than the male. This is an important factor if you live in an apartment. You will recall that the male dog has an instinct for lifting his leg and urinating against trees, poles and fireplugs. He won't hesitate to use table and chair legs, doorjambs or floor lamps as substitutes.

The female has a strong maternal and protective instinct. She will guard children (especially if raised with them) as closely as she will guard her puppies. Some dog trainers consider the female to be more tractable, more willing to learn and with a longer attention span than the male.

You now should be in a stronger position to find a dog which will really suit you.

American Eskimo Dog: General Care Guide
By Gerry Ronson

The American Eskimo dog has a long history dating back to German settlers. Apparently the dog breed is descended from the Spitz breed. You will also be glad to learn that this particular dog was a working in circuses for many years. This means that along with the affection and intelligence they show you will also find an agility and alertness that makes them a true companion. They can learn many skills in training from tricks to actual work with dog sleds. They are a hardy breed, which means they do not have many health issues. You will also find that they enjoy large families. The American Eskimo dog will be really great with children as well as other pets. They can be suspicious of strangers, but most often you will find they are quick to get over these feelings. In fact they will bark as a stranger approaches and make great guard dogs. American Eskimo dogs need a lot of attention, which means part of their care is the amount of exercise, playtime, and general time you spend with them.

You will need to be around the dog for most of the day. This means frequent trips home during the day if you work out of the home to offer playtime as well as exercise. They should have at least an hour of exercise a day and you should never leave them alone while you are on vacation. They tend to become destructive if they are isolated for long periods of time. You will find that they are great at giving love as well as receiving it. For training you will find they are easy to please. This means that they will enjoy the training because they get to play and they will listen to your commands and be very alert. You may have some trouble with obedience, but most often that is short lived with a firm, but gentle hand.

This dog breed needs a large backyard and home. They can do okay in apartments as long as most of the day is spent out side playing. They are also very active indoors so make sure you have plenty of toys for them to enjoy. For grooming you will find that the care is a little more in depth than other pets. The American Eskimo dog needs to have a daily brushing after their walk in the evening. This will help keep the hair from matting as well as tangles. It will also get rid of any dead or loose hair they may have. They have dry skin so bathing is not recommended.

The American Eskimo dog is one of the most beautiful dog breeds you will find. This dog is of medium size offering a white, cream, or biscuit colour. Theyre size proportions are 30 to 40 pounds and an average height of 12- 19 depending on the gender of the animal. You will find that in most cases the male dog is slightly bigger than the female. Going back to the coat for a moment you will find that with the longer hair they tend to shed a little more in warmer months, but typically in Alaska and other cold parts of the country they will not shed very much. The coat is a double fur with a thick undercoat for warmth and a top coat that is very soft and bushy. The coat will usually be straight. The tail on this particular dog will curl up like most of the Husky breeds to lie on the back. The muzzle is long, and they have short pointed ears.

Should You Try Green Bean Diet Dog Food?
By Jessica N

Nope, this is not about feeding your dog a strict diet of green beans only. Here's at it works: You get a can of green beans and mix some of that up with your dog's own regular food.

The benefit of this is keeping your dog full in between meals. If you have a dog that's anything like mine, she's always hungry and looking for anything to snack on. She stays particularly full and well fed when I give her some green beans with her food. She's quite satisfied, at least until the next meal.

This trick isn't something you have to do for all dogs. But this is really nice for these dogs that could eat more than they should at one meal. If you decide to try this, remember that only a small amount of green beans per meal will do. You don't have to go filling your pantry with tons of cans. Store the leftover green beans in the can in the fridge, until the next day.

Keep track of how much you are giving your dog by measuring it. Be consistent: Give her the same amount every day once she's accustomed to it. But start small. Just slip in a little tiny bit, then increase the amount every day.

Go ahead and stock up on green beans if you see a great sale. But remember, you won't be going through them that fast, unless you have a huge dog that can eat a huge helping of food at one time.

The amount you feed her, depends of course on how much she typically eats and her size. Another thing: No salt. Do your best to find green beans that don't have salt added in.

The best advantage here with this diet dog food plan is that your dog will be able to get back to a normal, healthy weight. Which means more energy and good health. Go for the green.

The Siberian Husky - A Majestic Sled Dog
By Gerry Ronson

The Siberian Huskies are just one of the working dog you may want to have if you live somewhere cold. They are a medium dog breed that offers loyalty, affection, and happiness for any human. You will find out below about some of their characteristics, grooming needs, and the proper care for these dogs.

If you take proper care of the Siberian husky you will find they live for more than ten or twelve years as faithful companions. They need a well balanced diet with plenty of protein and of course a lot of daily exercise. The Siberian husky is usually 35 to 60 inches in height depending on the sex and 20 to 24 pounds. They have medium length hair that is usually a white, gray, or black. You will also find that they tend to have blue eyes. They have thick coarse fur to keep them warm in the cold climates. You will also find that they have two coats, an undercoat that is usually thick and very soft, and a top coat that is a little coarser. You will find that they are usually lighter in color on the underside. Their faces are usually thin like a wolf, with a slightly long muzzle. The tail tends to remain uncurled unlike other breeds that they mirror.

If you are interested in a Siberian husky you should realize that they need a lot of exercise. They love to work and be useful so any time you can give them something to do even if it is just training you will have a happy dog. You will find that they exhibit agility, dominance, and pride. The dominance stems from the sled dogs that they are. They need to show some type of dominance in order to lead the back as a team. Some of the Siberian huskies will have less dominance as they were breed for further back in the team. However they all love to have a job given to them. They are highly intelligent, which means they can learn tricks, as well as work. You will find obedience training is a little difficult with the dominant nature, but they will soon learn who is master. As long as you keep a gentle hand and a firm hand with consistency you should have little trouble with further training. They do need to be socialized with other animals at an early age because of their hunting instincts. They get along great with other Huskies, but cats and other small pets can be an issue. They can get bored fairly easily so having a home with a medium sized backyard is usually very important. They would rather run around all day than be cooped up inside.

For care you will find that daily walks are needed, at least a total of two hours. Grooming is important on a daily basis to avoid matting and tangles. You should also know for care that the Siberian husky can have cataracts and retinal atrophy so you need to have frequent eye checks as well as other vet visits. These dogs love to be around people and be of use. They can even be pretty great with children as they are a hardy breed.
